  • We Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release Hedgehogs

It is thought that since the 1950s, the British Hedgehog population has fallen from 30 million to less than 1 million.

So we thought we should do something to help and set up Hedgehog Friendly Town for hedgehogs around Stratford-upon-Avon.

We Rescue, Rehabilitate and then Release the hedgehogs back to the wild. We also go to events and do talks to try and raise awareness of how hedgehogs are suffering and what people can do to help. We have also been made RSPCA Young Ambassadors.

We have been doing this for over 4 years now and we are really enjoying it. Initially we just fed them up until they could be released. However, now we have been trained to do injections with different types of medications, treat with fluids and also use a nebuliser.

We have also had to look after hogs that are only weeks old, feeding them every four hours and if they are really young (days old), feeding with a syringe every two hours (getting up in the night too!).

We have even had to remove maggots from hedgehogs with Fly Strike. Most of the time they are crawling in their ears, eyes and even under their arms and the worst thing is that the maggots can eat them alive from the inside. Fly Strike tends to affect very young and ill hogs and it can be really upsetting.

We also have microscopes to check poo samples for any parasites, worms and even fluke. If the hog has any of these we will treat it immediately. As fluke is the deadliest we usually treat that first and then the next step is to check the poo sample again to see if we need treat again.

We are so proud to have won the RSPCA Honours Young Persons AwardThe Mirror Young Animal Hero Award, a Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Award for Most Outstanding Group in Touch with Nature and also a Pride of Stratford Award. We have also been given a Points of Light Award from The Prime Minister.

We have appeared also on BBC Countryfile, BBC Springwatch Wild Academy, ITV Central News and local radio stations.

All the food and particularly the medications used to treat the hedgehogs are very expensive.
